Cultivation of Pear in Korea is recorded in a literature in Samhan Dynasties and Shilla Dynasty and considering,
of course, records of cultivating pear in Goryeo dynasty period, the history is so long.
It also seems that the species of the variety would have been executed long time ago and looking into Domundaejak,
which was written by Heo Gyun on 1611 AD, it reads 5 species while Cheongsilbae pear appeared in a complete version of Chunhyangjeon,
which is supposedly written in the 19th century, and Hwangsilbae pear and Chsonegsilbae pear mentioned in the early days of Korea Republic,
which is also evidential that pear used to be cultivated widely.
In a survey in 1920's, there were written 33 traditional species and other 26 species of which scientific names are unknown. |

It is known that the origin of all types of pear is originated from the south western China.
It is therefore supposed that from the place, pear is introduced to Korea and Japan via Southeast Asia,
and the species distributed to southern area of Korea, central and southern areas of Japan and southern
area in China are Japanese pear(Sand Pear), the species distributed to central Asia, southern Manchuria,
northern Habukseong, and northern areas of Korea is Chinese pear(White Pear) while western pear(Pear) is
the species grown naturally in the central and southern Europe.
The first record about pear in Korea goes back to the Samhan Dynasties and Shilla Dynasty,
which means lots of people loved it. For the species variety, it reads in Domundaejak,
which was written by Heo Gyun, that 5 species existed, and it was also found that other names such as
Cheongsilbae pear and Whantsilbae pear were mentioned in early days, which is also evidential that pear
used to be cultivated widely. |
